Healthier Home and Planet!

Last month I decided to go ahead and buy a few items I have been wanting and just never obtained. While the cost was low (all relative, I know), there just never seemed to be a good time in the budget to check these off. Finally, I decided there would never be a good time and took the plunge. Perhaps and apt word to use.

I purchased three items for my home and am exceedingly pleased with them. I bought a water purifier (by Pur) for my kitchen faucet, a filter for my shower and a low-flow shower head. I picked up all three items for less than $90 at Lowes, but you can probably find comparable items in a store near you, or online.

I drink a fair amount of tea at my house. When I buy the tea at a local shop, The Tea Smith it just tastes better. I know they have the water at the right temperature so that the leaves are steeped properly, but the bigger advantage was the purified water. Adding a kitchen sink purifier did the trick. Not only does my tea taste better, so does pasta and the vegetables and fruits I wash. Psychosomatic... perhaps but I suspect not.

The shower has been the biggest boon. It really makes a difference washing in clean water. You might think you have good water quality at home, but I bet you will notice the difference when you shower under a filtered spray. You do not smell the chlorine and you skin does not feel as tight and dried-out after you towel off. For me, I could smell the difference. Weird, I know, but the water smelled like water. I had no idea how used to the additives I had become.

I coupled my shower filter with a low-flow shower head. Being fair, most heads are already rated and 2.5 gallons per minute which meets the low-flow standard. The one I located has two settings: 1.8 and 2.5. While I have not noticed a significant difference and thus keep mine at 1.8, some claims have been made about the 2.5 offering an 'invigorating' spray. I look at it as I am using less water, and still getting a refreshing showering experience.
