Jumper Falls
Jumper Falls

I just watched the movie Jumper last night and thought it sucked. The premise was flimsy and nothing was ever really explained. Not that I need handheld guidance in this genre, but it does make the experience more believable. The biggest crime was in the very opening of them film. The character tells me, “I used to be normal. A chump like you.” Do I need to be degraded for electing to watch this film?
I have noticed this in two of the last few films I have seen. A blatant attack on the movie watchers en masse. The writer finding it fit to have the lead character, which ideally we are supposed to sympathize with and support, tell all of us that we are inferior somehow because we have not been granted super human powers through no doing of our own. Had the characters been trained or studied all their life or just got lucky and figured things out, I would not mind it as much. The whole little man to shining star scenario. But to just wake up and presto be a super powered individual? Sorry for my being a human you superior jackass.
I also resent that just because characters magically awaken to these powers, they can also kick butt in fights. What is that connection? I can inexplicably jump anywhere in the world, so therefore I ought to also be able to beat up villains who have hunted my kind for decades. I should also be able to withstand 10,000 volts (I believe that was the figure) of electricity coursing through my body, more specifically my brain, without popping like an egg in a microwave. No explanation for any of that. Just comes with the package apparently.
The dialogue is shallow and the character development just occurs in front of you when it needs to, without any explanation or justification. Even if you were not insulted within the first minute of the movie, you are never given a reason to care a bit about what is going on in any of their lives. I was actually hoping he would be caught and punished because he seems like an ass. The effects are interesting but the action, although well choreographed, just did not pull me in.
If you really love sci-fi action films, you might enjoy this conceptually. Don’t expect more than that though.
